Hey there Reader,
This week's newsletter comes at you from 39 days of consistent meditation. Yay!! I was able to finish my 30 day beginner meditation program 2 weeks ago and I'm so proud of myself.
For the past 39 days, I gave myself at least 10 minutes to pause, sit with myself and simply be.
This had me thinking, If I can build consistency with my meditation practice, why is it sometimes hard to build consistency in other areas of my life? Let me tell you what insights I've come to.
- Consistency begins with ease
- Consistency must have the least amount of barriers
- Consistency is connected to either avoiding a consequence or chasing a reward that is important to you.
Want to build consistency to parts of your business? Let's look at the following steps:
Step 1: Identify Areas Where You’re Already Consistent
Before looking at your business, take a moment to reflect on the areas of your life where you’re already consistent. Often we focus on the areas we're having trouble in without recognizing that we are already consistent in tons of areas of our lives. For example:
- Do you brush your teeth every day? (If not, you should!)
- Do you walk your dog every morning and evening?
- Do you make your bed before heading to work?
These small, automatic habits are proof that you’re capable of being consistent. By analyzing these patterns, you can use similar principles to build consistency in other areas, like your business.
Step 2: Understand Your "Why"
Every consistent habit is driven by a “why.” Are you avoiding a negative consequence, or are you chasing a positive reward? For example:
- Walking your dog regularly? You’re likely avoiding the mess of an untrained pet in your home.
- Meditating daily? You’re probably seeking the calm and clarity it brings.
Understanding this motivation is crucial because it shapes how you approach new habits. Reflect on your “why” for building consistency in your business. Is it to avoid stagnation or to experience growth and connection with your audience? Your clarity here will serve as your anchor when motivation begins to drop.
Step 3: Choose One Area to Focus On
Don’t try to build consistency everywhere at once. Doing so will only lead to overwhelm. Instead, pick one area of your business that will create the most impact. For example:
- Posting on social media daily.
- Sending a weekly newsletter.
- Creating regular YouTube videos.
For me, I focused on my weekly newsletter and YouTube channel. These became my non-negotiables because they allowed me to nurture my audience and repurpose content for other platforms. Identify the one area where you want to be consistent, and start there.
Step 4: Connect with the Feeling
Once you’ve chosen your focus, ask yourself: What’s the emotional connection behind this habit? Are you motivated by fear of a negative outcome, or by the joy of achieving a positive result? For example:
- If you want to post consistently on social media, is it because you fear losing relevance (avoiding a consequence)?
- Or do you love engaging with your audience and sharing your creativity (seeking a reward)?
There’s no right or wrong answer, but understanding your feelings will reignite your motivation when you feel like giving up. Reconnect with this emotion every time you need a push to stay consistent.
Step 5: Identify and Solve Your Main Barrier
What’s the one thing that most often prevents you from being consistent? Let’s tackle it head-on. Here are some common barriers and potential solutions:
- Time: Block out specific times in your calendar.
- Perfectionism: Set a timer and post when it goes off, no matter what.
- Lack of ideas: Batch brainstorm topics once a month.
- Tech challenges: Simplify your processes or seek training.
Focus on removing just one barrier to make staying consistent easier. Start small and build from there. For instance, if you’ve never made a YouTube video before, commit to one every two weeks instead of weekly. Small, manageable steps lead to sustainable progress.
Consistency Doesn't Have to Be Hard
Here’s the secret: consistency begins with ease. It’s not about grinding harder or forcing yourself into habits you hate. It’s about understanding yourself—your motivations, your barriers—and setting yourself up for success. Start with small, simple tasks that are easy to show up for and build from there.
My meditation practice has been easy to sustain because I can sit in my corner, making sure I have nowhere to be in the next 10 minutes and listen to a guided meditation. I can do it at home, I can do it in the car, I even do it at the park after a run. If I have my phone on me, I can turn on my meditation app, sit and close my eyes for the next 10 minutes.
Remember, the goal isn’t consistency for its own sake. It’s about showing up with intention, rooted in your values and your desire to serve. Even if no one engages at first, your intention matters. Over time, your audience, clients, and cash flow will come—but only because you stayed consistent in serving with purpose.
What’s Your Next Step?
Now that you have these five steps, it’s time to take action. What’s one area in your business where you’d like to start building consistency? Share your thoughts with me in the poll below.
