Last week I shared some tools for showing up for yourself and why it's so important during this political climate.
Today I want to share some tangible, concrete ways you can do to fight back using our businesses, our buying power and our collective strength.
- Today is 'No Buy' Friday. Read what it is about here on The Washington Post.
Essentially -try to not buy from large corporations or at all. If you must buy today, buy local or from small businesses.
The strategy? To send a message to large corporations about our collective buying power. Will it work? We don't know, but tangible actions can snowball to be very powerful.
2. Provide a percentage of your revenue to organizations directly fighting the Trump administration. You can see a list of organizations here. Among these organizations?
- American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) - nonprofit legal organization assisting in civil rights, trans people's rights and abortion cases.
- National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) - longest running organization fighting for the rights of people of color.
- ProPublica - non-profit organization using investigative reporting to fact-check the Trump administration.
3. Use your platform to continuously speak out and remind your people, customers and clients that we are in this together. For example, use:
- Vocal advocacy: Consistently speak out about social issues that align with your company values across all communication channels
- Community connection: Explicitly link your business operations and services to broader social commitments, making values visible to customers and stakeholders
- Economic solidarity: Deliberately direct purchasing power toward local small businesses and those owned by marginalized communities
- Amplification: Use your platform to boost important social justice messages and organizations doing critical work
- Values-based community building: Grow your customer base and business network by attracting those who share your commitment to social change
Overall, this strategy positions your business as both an economic entity and a values-driven community hub that actively contributes to social justice through consistent messaging, intentional economic choices, and community leadership.
Our businesses, our values, our communities and of course we our selves must stay in tact so that we keep moving forward.
In Solidarity,
Bea
