Navigating Political Differences Among Family Members

Issue 5

Hola Amiga,

Yesterday was the primary statewide elections here in CA. Not only did I fill out my ballot, but I was asked by my mom to fill out hers as well. As I was filling out her ballot, she naturally shared what she is looking for in a candidate and it made me realize that while we hold similar values, we also have opposing views on some issues.

It got me thinking-how do we navigate family relationships that we value when they may hold opposing political views and stances?

Sure, we can probably avoid political discussions altogether, but what about those times when their stances feel like a betrayal to our identities, values and lived experiences?

In this week's blog, I share a practical tool for these moments and it's not just setting boundaries.

Happy reading!

Navigating Political Differences Among Family Members

Therapy Vs. Coaching

I started a coaching practice about three years ago, and through that experience, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the differences between coaching and therapy and how both can support self-awareness and growth in different ways.

Let me start with one of the most noticeable differences: coaching often focuses more heavily on future goals and action-taking, while therapy may spend more time exploring past experiences and patterns that influence the present.

What does this look like in practice?

Let's say you're unsure whether you should look for a new job or ask for a raise at your current role, a coach may ask questions that help clarify your goals, values, and what outcome you ultimately want.

If you brought that same question into therapy, your therapist may explore past experiences, relationship patterns, or beliefs that could be influencing this current question.

Neither approach is better than the other, they simply serve different purposes depending on what support you may need.
